About Oxford Academic

Research with impact

Oxford Academic is Oxford University Press’s (OUP) academic research platform, providing access to over 50,000 books and 500 journals. We serve the diverse and changing research needs of students, researchers, professors, and practitioners and seek ongoing feedback from these communities.

Authoritative content

We hold a commitment to publishing pioneering authors and authoritative content, and with Oxford Academic you can research, discover, and explore the latest in scholarship from around the world. According to the 2022 Journal Citation Report from Clarivate, 47% of OUP journals are in the top quartile of their subject categories and eight are in the #1 spot.

Read new and classic publications from pioneering authors, alongside those who have received distinguished awards, such as the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award (US), Cundill Prize, Wolfson Prize, Nobel Prize, and other honours. And explore our high profile book series such as Very Short Introductions, Oxford Medical Textbooks, Oxford Handbooks, and Treatments That Work.

Innovative and easy-to-use technology

Search across Oxford Academic’s growing body of three million journal articles, 600,000 book chapters, and five million images and multimedia to meet your research needs. Ongoing investments in innovative technologies enable Oxford Academic to keep pace with current and future requirements from the academic community.

Institutions and libraries can subscribe to or purchase Oxford Academic content. If you need access to a specific resource, recommend it to your librarian directly, or use our online form.

Selected Oxford Academic journals and books are also available for individual purchase or subscription.

Accessible and inclusive

The core of OUP’s mission is to make the publications we create, in collaboration with authors and partners, widely available across the world. There are many ways that we assure broad access: virtually all of our journals offer open access (OA) publishing options, with a growing number of fully OA titles and an ever-increasing library of open access books.

Oxford Academic adheres to evolving accessibility standards, including World Wide Web Consortium guidelines, so you can:

  • Use your own accessibility tools and software
  • Read content on your preferred device or screen size
  • Download chapters, articles, and images to take the research offline
  • Share chapters and articles with colleagues, students, and classmates

Thousands of subjects

All our content is classified against a list of more than 1,500 academic disciplines: Oxford Academic’s subject taxonomy. This taxonomy helps users find the content they are looking for, with subjects available to browse, as filters when searching, and as links in the content itself.

Oxford Academic’s subject taxonomy is a semantic subject classification, describing what the content is about. This means that a book, chapter, or journal article can have multiple subject classifications applied to it, to best represent each discipline in which that content is relevant. This is especially important for interdisciplinary research.

This taxonomy is different to the modules available to purchase within our institutional book products, for example Love: A Very Short Introduction is in both the Psychology and Philosophy subject areas on Oxford Academic but is sold within the Philosophy module of Very Short Introductions.
