Thousands of subjects
All our content is classified against a list of more than 1,500 academic disciplines: Oxford Academic’s subject taxonomy. This taxonomy helps users find the content they are looking for, with subjects available to browse, as filters when searching, and as links in the content itself.
Oxford Academic’s subject taxonomy is a semantic subject classification, describing what the content is about. This means that a book, chapter, or journal article can have multiple subject classifications applied to it, to best represent each discipline in which that content is relevant. This is especially important for interdisciplinary research.
This taxonomy is different to the modules available to purchase within our institutional book products, for example Love: A Very Short Introduction is in both the Psychology and Philosophy subject areas on Oxford Academic but is sold within the Philosophy module of Very Short Introductions.
